Legal Aid of Western Michigan has a dedicated staff who provide legal assistance to eligible clients. Legal aid provides legal advice and representation in a variety of areas, including consumer matters, family matters, housing matters, government benefits such as SSI, food stamps and Medicaid, and other “non-fee-generating” matters. Legal aid does not deal with criminal cases. If you have a low income and are charged with a crime, contact the court to ask for a lawyer. Those eligible for free legal advice from Legal Aid of Western Michigan are low-income individuals and seniors (60 years of age and older). Services are for people who have reached or slightly exceeded the federal poverty line. Families receiving government benefits or working in lower-paying jobs are most likely to be eligible for services. Legal Aid of Western Michigan (LAWM) is a not-for-profit law firm that provides advice, brief services and representation to low-income individuals. LAWM`s practice areas include housing, family law, public service advocacy, consumer affairs and education.
