While this can protect you if a project takes longer than expected or if it`s an excessive number of processing requests, this model doesn`t allow freelancers to increase their revenue as they become more efficient. While you may end up charging per project, it doesn`t hurt to know what you want to earn and how much you want to work to charge an hourly rate. If you want to work 20 hours a week, 50 weeks a year and earn $30,000, you will have to accept a job that pays you $30 an hour ($30,000 ÷ 50 weeks = $600 per week. 600 ÷ 20 hours = $30 per hour). If you find a job that pays you $50 per article and you can write that article in less than 2 hours, it would reach your goal of $30 per hour on average. Prices vary greatly from client to client, and my prices change depending on the scope of the project, the type of work and my occupation. For my freelance writing business, pricing is a fluid component, but it`s important to have a goal in mind about what you want your “hourly rate” to be when you price item assignments. If you`re just starting out as a freelance writer and use that time to gain experience and get clips so you can raise your prices later, you may have to settle for a lower price and be flexible when considering how much to charge for 500-word articles at first.
