MEANING: Reduce the speed when you reach the intersection. Be prepared to stop and yield to vehicles and pedestrians in or towards the intersection. You must stop at a YIELD sign if traffic conditions require it. When approaching a YIELD sign, check traffic carefully and be prepared to stop. Unfortunately, the “I didn`t know” defence rarely works to get you out of a speeding ticket. This is clearly written in the New York Driver`s Manual, which you can access online at any time. It states, “You can`t light a red light in New York unless a sign is installed to allow it.” Arrows: The arrows indicate the channels you should use. For example, in this figure, you can only turn right from the right lane. To go straight, you must use the left lane. You must be in the right lane before you reach the continuous line separating the tracks. Traffic lights are usually red, yellow and green from top to bottom or from left to right.

At some intersections, there are solitary red, yellow or green traffic lights. Some traffic lights come on regularly, others flash. Some are round and others are arrows. State law states that if traffic lights or checkpoints are out of service or not working properly when approaching an intersection, you must stop as a stop sign. You must then continue according to the rules of passage, unless a traffic officer asks you to continue. While vehicles are supposed to give pedestrians a red to red turn, realistically they don`t. Flashing yellow “X”: This lane can only be used for a left turn. Solid line with dotted line: If you are on the side of the continuous line, you will not be able to pass or pass other vehicles, except to turn left into an aisle. If you are on the side with the line broken, you can pass if it is safe and you do not disturb the traffic. MEANING: These signs provide information on traffic direction rules, lane usage, turns, speed, parking and other special requirements.

In the rest of the state, you can turn right at a red light when you stop, yield the right of way to all oncoming traffic and pedestrians, and as long as there is no sign prohibiting a right to red. “The sign says, right there you can turn right and they sit here,” another driver said. “And they get angry when you beep.” MEANING: Arrive at a point, yield the right of way to vehicles and pedestrians in or in the direction of the intersection. Go when it`s safe. You must stop before the stop line, if there is one. Otherwise, you must stop before entering the pedestrian crossing. (See “Stops and Pedestrian Crossings” in the “Sidewalk Markings” section of this chapter.) If there is no stop line or crosswalk, you must stop before entering the intersection at the closest point to the intersection, which gives you a view of traffic on the intersecting roadway. If you earn 11 points or more within 18 months, your licence may be suspended. Whenever you`re within the city limits and you`re not sure if a red right is allowed, assume it`s not. Around the city, there are signs in 336 different places that allow a right to red.

Staten Island has the most locations with 198, followed by Brooklyn with 58, Queens with 55, the Bronx with 19 and Manhattan, as expected, with the least, with only six. In New York, almost everywhere foot traffic is high. There are a few places on the edges of the periphery that have a sign that allows straight on the red, but quite rarely. This should really be more common in some of these areas because sometimes it`s ridiculous when there are no cars or other people around. “I didn`t really know, I`m still stuck here,” one driver said. He was actually waiting to turn right and could have turned logistically if we hadn`t spoken to him. Stable green: Walk but yield to other vehicles at the intersection as required by law (see Chapter 5). Turning right at a red light is not something New Yorkers driving around the city are used to.

Of course, except for intersections where there is a sign that turning right is allowed, why is turning right at red lights illegal in New York City? Drivers can turn right in red just about anywhere in the U.S., except in New York, where it`s only allowed if it`s posted. I drive a car in the city and I`m very happy I can`t turn red. If I turn left or right, when the traffic light is green, I feel like pedestrians are constantly jumping in front of my car. You can turn right at a fixed red light after stopping and yield to oncoming traffic and pedestrians. You can turn left at a fixed red light if you turn from one one-way street to another one-way street after stopping and yielding to oncoming traffic and pedestrians.
